How to choose the thickness of the yoga mat?

The international standard thickness of the yoga mat is 1.5MM-8MM. However, the choice of yoga mat still needs to be targeted, and the actual situation mainly depends on these two points:

1. According to the yoga foundation of the practitioner.

Generally, for practitioners who are just starting to do yoga, they may wish to choose a thicker mat, such as 6mm thick, in order to prevent sports injuries. But you can't choose a too thick mat because you are afraid of pain, too thick will easily lose your balance during practice and your center of gravity will be unstable. If you have a certain foundation, you can choose a yoga mat with a thickness of about 3.5mm-5mm. Professional yogis generally use yoga mats with a thickness of 1.5-4 mm.

When buying a yoga mat, use your thumb and index finger to pinch the yoga mat to see how soft and firm it is. The better the elasticity, the more protective the human body. Moreover, if you are very afraid of pain, you can use a relatively thick yoga mat to practice.

2. According to the form of yoga practiced.

In terms of personal needs, it also depends on what kind of yoga is done. If you study yoga that focuses on flexibility training, you spend most of your time sitting on a mat, then the mat is thicker and softer, and you will be more comfortable to sit on. However, if the yoga you learn is Power Yoga or Ashtanga Yoga, which is mainly based on jumping, the mat should not be too thick, and the requirements for slip resistance should also be higher. The cushion is too soft, and it will be very difficult to do a lot of movements when standing on it (especially the balance movements such as tree pose). Some of the more discerning people also feel that the thick yoga mat hinders their contact with the ground and so on. In addition, this kind of yoga movement will cause a lot of sweat, and if there is no mat with better anti-slip degree, slippage will occur.

If you feel that your knees are uncomfortable when doing some kneeling movements on the thin mat, you can put a yoga towel under your knees.
